Maruti 800 Flagship Car Launched 1984
The Maruti 800 is the flagship car of the Maruti Udyog stable and was
launched in the Indian market in December 1984. It is a perfect city
car and is basically a remodeled version of the Suzuki Alto. For a very
long time since its introduction to the Indian markets, the Maruti 800
has been the highest selling car. But recently it has been overtaken in
the sales figure by Maruti Alto, which is also part of the Maruti Udyog
family.
The Maruti 800 is exported to a lot of countries in the
South-eastern Asia. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the two major
importers in this region. The South American market is another
destination for the Maruti 800. In Chile the car is sold under the name
Suzuki Maruti. It had been available in a few select European markets
between 1988 and 1992 and was sold by the name Suzuki Maruti. In India
there are two versions of the Maruti 800, one has air-conditioning and
the other comes without air-conditioning. There have been some recent
feature additions like, power steering and disc breaks. When it was
initially launched, 100% of the parts were imported.
There have
been a few minor changes to the looks of the Maruti 800 since it was
launched in 1984, but at the core it still remains the same car. The
sales of the car have been experiencing a steady downslide due to the
introduction of the Maruti Alto. It is a more attractive car, but at a
comparable price. The car has a horsepower of about 37 bhp or 28 kW.
The wheelbase is 12 inch or 305 millimeters.
The curb weight is
650 kg or 1433 pounds. The Maruti 800 car has a seating capacity for
four passengers, which includes the driver. The seating is quite
comfortable. The car can reach a top speed of around 125 km/h (78 mph).
The USP of the car is the fact that it is Indias most fuel efficient
car. It is known to deliver fuel economy in the region of 17 km/l under
city conditions and on clear and plain roads it gives a mileage of
around 20 km/l. Maruti Suzuki had earlier launched a version with a 3
valves per cylinder engine producing 45 bhp coupled with a 5-speed
manual transmission, but discontinued it after a couple of years. Later
Euro III version of the car was launched in 2005
